THE WORKS OF SIMON COSTIN – FASHION ART DIRECTOR & SET DESIGNER
SIMON COSTIN
Often when witnessing the finished results, of Creative editorial spreads and campaigns. The thoughts ‘’who thinks them up?, how do they make them?, and who do the magazines employ to contribute such enthused thoughts?’’ may sometimes cross our minds. Who are the genius workings behind certain ideas. And where do their inspirations come from?
Recently through my new job i have become interested in the contributing work of Simon Costin. An internationally respected art director & Set designer. Who is most renowned for the conceptually ambitious, & intriguingly imaginative nature for his editorial and catwalk designs. I stumbled upon a few of his works yesterday and i found them to be unique, with an almost symbolic & distinct unity, and mirroring to the Clothes. With his complimentary use of colours shapes and props.
As though transported to a different time or place, leaving behind the one which we are so familiar with. Costins magical sets include models walking out of giant Magazines. And everyday objects being enlarged to great effect to dwarf the featuring models. Often colourful, The models and stylists involved in each shoot, emphasise costins way of thinking with the models intriguing and relevant poses. Seeing models nonchalantly lying down, or taking different stances with distant gazes and stiff straight postures. Mirroring life size mannequins.
Simon Costin has collaborated extensively with Alexander McQueen both on McQueen’s own line and Givenchy ready-to-wear and haute couture shows. Costin’s client list includes Hermès, Lanvin, Kim Jones, Maison Martin Margiela, Alice Temperley, Stella McCartney and Luella Bartley. Costin currently works with Gareth Pugh as his set designer and has designed Pugh’s last eight shows both in London and Paris. Simon Costin has been a long-term collaborator with Tim Walker on his fashion shoots. And his work has been displayed in many exhibitions, at venues as diverse as a forest in Argyll, the ICA in London and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
